Couples or people in relationships often get surprised and dumbfounded whenever their partners asked them the question - do you love me? You know how deep and big the words "I love you" is, so is the same question "do you love me?". Many young people in the circular world just use the word "I love you" anyhow and leave the opposite sex vulnerable. The words have been bastardized so much among us humans but when it comes to the relationship between men and God (Trinity), can you judge your observations if such is the same scenario?
Nowadays, believers just open up their mouths to say "I love you Lord Jesus", "I love God", "I love the Holy Spirit" etc without checking themselves if truly they've demonstrated love to God and reciprocated the love of God back to Him. Especially when the song "I love you forever" by Tye Tribbett becomes so popular to almost every (modern) believers and churches. Well, you might say it's impossible for humans even believers to love God the way He loves us, but without much ado, let's unveil this "I love you" and "Do you love me?" syndrome.
Few days ago, the Holy Spirit asked me "Do you love me?" and I was amazed because I've never heard Him ask such in a long time. Most times, it is I who used to ask myself the question in my Spirit "Do you love God?" or "How much do you love God?", not God Himself asking me. So, I asked Him after His question "Do I love you?". It sounds funny at first but then on a serious note, I began to search within myself (my heart) just like King David and I found out I've not loved Him enough. The next thing I did was to apologize for not loving Him as much as He would to me and prayed that He helps me to do so henceforth. Immediately, I felt a sound peace within me.
Do you know how shocked Peter was when Jesus asked him if he loved Him? Although he answered straight jokingly in a surprised manner at first with "Sir, you know I love you" but when Jesus asked the third time, you could tell how amazed he was when he told Him "Sir, you know all things, you know I love you". Peter was grieved because he truly loved God but Jesus knew Peter hadn't loved Him as much as He wanted yet. That is a test of love.
Instead of waiting for God (through the Holy Spirit) to ask you if you love Him, why don't you resort to asking Him daily if you love Him and plead with Him to help you love Him more until He tells you personally that "I love you" like He did to Lawrence Oyor? I believe it was at that moment Evangelist Lawrence Oyor started to call himself "a lover of God" unlike many who do that ignorantly today. Most times, listen to the pet name the Holy Ghost calls you, it shows how deep your relationship is with or to Him.
I have a free gift to the singles, engaged and married. It was a secret the Holy Spirit revealed to me few days back on the foundation of a WhatsApp relationship meeting. Thanks to the founder of Transformative Pen - Timilehin David and the guest speaker - Mfon Grace that night.
Do you know that the best and the first secret to loving people (both strangers, friends, loved ones - families and Co and enemies) is loving God first? The proof of that is in 1Jh 4:19-21. If you love God, it becomes impossible for you not to love men especially your fellow believers. And if you love God, you are loving Him because He loved you first. This is just like faith in an invisible God; if you can love an invisible God, how much more the people you can see. That scripture tells us that, it becomes uneasy and impossible for you to love God who you cannot see when you don't love your brethren. The reason why you are struggling in loving any type of person irrespective of their relationship or character with you is because you are not loving God the way you should.
Lastly, to the singles, you still have time and chance to love God to the extreme before the will of God (your life partner) comes in. And for those in marriage, go back to your first love (God), make things right and pray for or with your partner to love God like never before; trust me, you are just starting to have the best moments in your marriage.
