Once upon a time in the past years, a brother who was one of the excos in his fellowship (during his secondary school days) was in one of their excos prayer meeting when something drastic happened. The prayer was hot, everybody was serious and (in the Spirit) praying when suddenly, he was feeling so pressed to release the air of digestion (flatus) in his stomach; not through the mouth (belch) but through his anus (fart or flatulate).
On one hand, he thought about the validity of the so called spiritual interpretation of such action (farthing or flatulating) which he once heard that it implies ease or victory over one's prayers (especially on the battle of one's life) at the moment of praying; while on the other hand, he thought about the natural interpretation of farting during prayers as "bad habit".
He asked himself; what if the air he releases was either silent or noisy and so smelly that the tension of the prayers could not cover it up, would it not be regarded as a distraction both naturally and spiritually for the brethren praying? What if investigation was carried out thereafter and he was implicated, would he not be put to shame and disciplined by his superiors or would he be neglected because of the common saying that "farting is a sign of good living"?
During this moment of his natural discomfort while powerful prayers were ongoing, he was caught off guard when suddenly his rumbling stomach had to force the air out of his anus. Alas, it was a silent one. He was relieved and was more fitted to fire on in prayers when suddenly the president of the fellowship leading the prayer stopped the prayers with the usual "in Jesus name we've prayed". Everybody including him (though his was with a lowered tone) responded with a shout of "Amen".
As usual, like everybody knows, whatever would warrant the pausing or stopping of prayer like that would either be preparation for rounding off prayers; sharing of revelation, vision, prophecies etc; permission for God to speak through anyone, or prayer charge and prayer points in continuation of prayers by the person leading the prayers etc. So he expected one of these reasons to be.
Meanwhile, they were in the "inner room" otherwise called "secretariat" (a teacher's office in one of the classes given to the fellowship by the school) and the two small iron windows and the iron door had been closed to reduce the echoes of their voices in the midnight (because it was a vigil) and to prevent any disturbances from other students or the watchman, because it was a boarding school.
Who farted? The President asked but no one responded or confessed; this brother kept mute. So his expected charge turned to a rebuke and correction from the President but in a very calm and masculine voice of warning to whoever has released the disturbing chemical gas that has penetrated the nose of the President first; and that such would have excused himself.
Well, you can say the President was naturally observant and not carried away because of the seriousness and fervency of prayers but he was wise to address the matter quickly without stopping the flow of the prayer atmosphere and indirectly telling others to neglect the supposed cause of distraction from one amidst them. You can go on to pass whatever judgment you deemed fit for the unknown brother but it can happen to anyone and it's one of those bad habits during prayer we believers often overlook, maybe because we are too spiritual.
Others are: sleeping during prayer; unnecessary falling down, screaming or physical exaggerations to prove to be touched by the anointing, imparted or felt the power of God; disobedience to instructions from the minister (like closing of eyes etc); unconscious observation of body nakedness because of impartation; uncaring attitude towards those falling under the anointing etc.
Some of these of course, might be signs of deliverance from demonic activities (on the negative side) or the manifestations of the outpouring of God's power (on the positive side during prayers but moreso, they could be natural bad habits that we often overlook.
I know it is spiritually advisable to prevent oneself from demonic manipulations during prayers by being sensitive and cautious through closing of the eyes, seriousness and other personal spiritual check up that needs to be observed for the right posture of one's spirit, soul and body (gates) for communion with God in prayers; but in other cases as well, to avoid selfishness and ignorance, it is naturally advisable also to be observant of what happens in your immediate surroundings while praying.
It might save you the trouble of unintentional physical injuries on you by others and vice versa; to correct or quickly address bad habits during prayers and to avoid distractions during prayers. Let's not be carried away by our own deceptions of spirituality and neglect attention to the natural realm we dwell in (as souls, having bodies) even though we don't belong in it forever (temporarily) because we are (and would permanently be) spirit beings (in the sense of eternity).
